Romania defeated Taiwan, qualified for the second round of the World Cup

Romania qualified for the second round of the Mixed Team World Cup in Chengdu (China), after defeating Taiwan, 8-4, on Tuesday, in Group 3.

Elizabeta Samara and Andrei Istrate brought Romania's first points with a victory in the mixed doubles, 2-1 (11-8, 11-9, 6-11), against the pair Jing-Kai Hung/Yu-Chiao Huang, according to the website of the Romanian Table Tennis Federation.

Bernadette Szocs beat Hsien-Tzu Cheng 3-0 (11-9, 11-5, 11-7) in the women's singles, and Eduard Ionescu won in the men's singles against Yan-Cheng Huang 2-1 (8-11, 11-8, 11-9). In the men's doubles, Darius Movileanu and Eduard Ionescu lost to Guan-Hong Kuo/Yan-Cheng Huang, 1-2 (8-11, 5-11, 11-8).

In the other match of the group, South Korea defeated Singapore, 8-0.

Romania ranked second in the group, with 5 points, behind South Korea (6), but followed by Singapore (4) and Taiwan (3).

The top two ranked teams qualified for the second round, in which all teams keep their results from the first phase and play in a single group.
