Romania's Defence Minister Angel Tilvar signed on Thursday in Brussels two letters of intent regarding Romania's participation in two new NATO high visibility projects.

Tilvar attended a NATO Defence Ministers meeting.

According to the Romanian Defence Ministry (MApN), the initiatives to which Romania is a part following the signing of the letters of intent are aimed at developing and commissioning for combat more effective solutions for combatting air threats at low altitudes, respectively passive capabilities for airspace surveillance.

The projects meet the current requirements to strengthen the capacity to counter air threats from low altitudes, such as unmanned aerial vehicles, which are becoming more widely used and technologically sophisticated, according to MApN.

"The pooling of expertise and resources by NATO states that decide to join the two high-visibility projects will allow the rapid identification of the most promising technological solutions in the field, optimising both costs and implementation time. Romania will benefit, by participating in these projects, from state-of-the-art solutions, which will complement the capacities already in place or to be provided under defence acquisition programmes already in preparation for these two very relevant areas amid the current security context," Tilvar is quoted as saying in a statement.

NATO high visibility projects (HVPs) create opportunities for cooperation among NATO member states to find solutions to critical deficiencies identified in capability development.
