Romania leads China 2-0 in the ATP Davis Cup - World Group II 2024, after tennis player Gabi Adrian Boitan defeated Yi Zhou 7-6 (7/4), 6-2, on Friday in the Polivalenta Hall in Craiova, told Agerpres.

Gabi Adrian Boitan (ATP world No. 364) prevailed after one hour and 42 minutes against a 19-year-old opponent.

Yi Zhou (ATP world No. 527) put Boitan in difficulty in the first part of the opening set with his powerful and accurate shots. The Chinese led 5-2, but Boitan made a spectacular comeback, saving two set points, one at 2-5 and one at 4-5. Boitan won the tiebreak 7-4 and then dominated the second set, 6-2.

Boitan managed 6 aces and served better than his opponent, especially on the second serve.

Filip Cristian Jianu (ATP world No. 234) was originally scheduled to face Zhou.

In the first singles match of the day, Cezar Creţu (ATP world No. 292) defeated Yunchaokete Bu (ATP world No. 113) 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7/4).

Saturday will start with the doubles match (13:00) between Victor Cornea/Bogdan Pavel and Fajing Sun/Rigele Te. Cornea is ranked 80th in the world in doubles, Pavel 272nd, Sun 289th and Te 742nd.

The last two singles matches will be played between Jianu and Bu and Creţu and Zhou, respectively, for the first time.

Romania and China have never met before in the Davis Cup.
