In the run up to Romania's National Day, the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra will perform at Rome's Sinopoli Hall - Parco della Musica Auditorium on November 27, and then on November 29 and 30 at the Romanian Athenaeum in Bucharest, in a bid to mark not only the celebration of Romanian statehood, but also the 155th anniversary of the prestigious orchestral institution.
Principal conductor Leo Hussain will be on the podium for all three concerts, and cellist Andrei Ionita will play as soloist. On the bill are works by George Enescu, Joseph Haydn, Richard Strauss and Gyorgy Ligeti, agerpres reports.
British conductor Leo Hussain is recognized as one of the most important musical leaders of his generation. He was music director at Rouen Opera and the Salzburg Landestheater, and recently conducted the Vienna and Bamberg symphony orchestras, the WDR Symphony Orchestra Koln, DSO Berlin, Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, the Gulbenkian Orchestra, and the Royal Danish Orchestra.
Winner of the 2015 Tchaikovsky Competition, Andrei Ionita is the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra's artist-in-residence in the 2023 - 2024 season. The only Romanian to win the First Prize at one of the world's major musical events, the Piotr Ilici Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow, the young cellist has an impressive calling card. Along with collaborations with prestigious names and successful appearances on the biggest stages, Andrei Ionita is the recipient of several important distinctions.
