Romania produces more potatoes than it consumes, and the only element missing in this setting is potato storage, for which a 50 million euro program is earmarked in the future National Strategic Plan, said, on Wednesday, after the Government sitting, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Adrian Chesnoiu.
The Minister then said that, at this time, there is no envisaged cap on prices for food, but there are a series of analyses on the basis of which certain decisions will be made, if the situation mandates it.
"The moment certain margins are exceeded, then intervention is possible and surely we will not hesitate to make these decisions when it is necessary. We have several scenarios prepared, but we aren't working on hunches, but on factual situations and when it is necessary, we certainly intervene," the official emphasized.
With regard to limiting cereal exports, the dignitary stated that, certainly, "we will not hesitate to make any decision that would ensure our internal consumption needs, but there is no need at this time."
"At this moment we are not discussing interdictions except, obviously, in Russia, which has introduced at the global level a generalized panic through the military aggression against Ukraine. From the point of view of Romania, we are very stable from all perspectives related to ensuring stocks for food items," said Adrian Chesnoiu.
According to the most recent data published by the National Institute for Statistics, potatoes are among the foods that have seen the highest price increases in the past year, namely 30.58% in the February 2021 - February 2022 interval.
