As many as 60 ovine rinderpest outbreaks are active in Romania nationwide, most of them located in eastern Tulcea County, the National Animal Health and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA) reported on Monday.
Of the active outbreaks, eight are at commercial farms, 14 at type A commercial farms, 37 at non-professional farms, and one outbreak is at a sheepfold.
In the outbreak areas, there are 232,927 animals registered with the National Database of the Animal Identification and Registration System (BND-SNIIA).
In Tulcea County, there are 49 outbreaks in 10 settlements as follows: seven commercial farms, 14 type A commercial farms and 28 non-professional farms, with a total of 212,973 animals; in southeastern Constanta County there are nine outbreaks in six settlements at non-professional farms of a total of 6,865 animals; in western Timis County, one outbreak at a commercial farm of a total of 12,500 animals; in southeastern Ialomita County, one outbreak at a sheepfold of a total of 589 animals.
Ovine rinderpest, also commonly known as peste des petits ruminants (PPR), is a contagious disease primarily affecting goats and sheep; however, wild small ruminants can also be affected. Mortality in infected animals can reach 70%.
