The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR) has sent the European Commission an official request for exceptional financial support from the European Union's agricultural reserve, in the context of the significant losses recorded by Romanian farmers in the fruit and wine sectors.

According to a press release from the MADR sent to AGERPRES on Tuesday, in the spring of 2025, fruit and wine plantations in fruit were seriously affected by successive episodes of late frost, with temperatures dropping to -7.3 degrees Celsius, recorded in several regions of the country.

Current estimates show that over 16,400 hectares of crops were compromised, and the financial losses for farmers amount to over 49 million euros, the MADR specifies.

"We are facing a dramatic situation in fruit growing and viticulture, sectors essential for the rural economy. We ask the European Commission to activate the support mechanisms from the agricultural reserve to save these farms from collapse. This is a moment when European solidarity must be manifested in concrete terms," the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Florin Barbu, in the press release cited.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has proposed emergency financial support in the amount of at least 3,000 euros/ha, which would cover part of the eligible expenses necessary to resume the production cycle. The Romanian authorities have expressed their willingness to provide all the necessary supporting data to substantiate a favorable decision.

The serious situation faced by Romanian farmers was also highlighted at the European Union Council - Agriculture and Fisheries (AgriFish), held in May in Brussels, where Minister Florin Barbu informed the member states and the European Commission about the extent of the damage caused by the late spring frost and hail in Romania.
