Romania's tennis player Irina Begu on Wednesday advanced to the women's singles round two at the 710,900-USD Charleston Open tournament after defeating Slovak Kristina Kucova 4-6 6-2 7-6 (6).
Tenth-seeded Begu, 26, WTA's 33rd, snatched a hard-fought victory after two hours and 29 minutes, after on Tuesday she had eased past Turkey's Cagla Buyukakcay 6-0 6-0.
Begu, a two-time Charleston quarter-finalist, has won 9,245 US dollars and 55 WTA singles points. In the next round, she meets sixth-seeded Australian Samantha Stosur, 33, WTA's 17th. This will be their first head-to-head meeting.
