Romania's Nicolae Onica won the bronze medal in total, in the men's 96-kg category on Wednesday at the World Weightlifting Championships in Ashgabat (Turkmenistan).
Onica totalled 391 kg and was overtaken by Iranian Sohrab Moradi (416 kg), and Chinese Tao Tian, (407 kg).
He finished five in the snatch (175 kg), failing in his last attempt to snatch 182 kg. The gold medal went to Moradi (186 kg), the silver to Tian (181 kg), and the bronze to Belarusian Yauheni Tsikhantsou (180 kg).
In the clean and jerk, Onica ranked fourth for 216 kg, failing in his two last attempts to clean and jerk 222 kg and 227 kg. The gold went to Moradi (230 kg), the silver to Tian (226 kg), and the bronze to Qatar's Fares Ibrahim Elbakh (217 kg).
Romania has lined up four athletes for the 2018 World Weightlifting Championships in Ashgabat Turkmenistan that qualify for a place in the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics, and ended with a tally of three medals: silver by Loredana Toma (women's 64 kg, snatch) and bronze by Cristina Iovu (women's 55 kg, clean and jerk) and Nicolae Onica (men's 96 kg, total). Only Elena Ramona Andries, competing in the women's 94 kg category failed to win a medal.
At the 2017 edition in Anaheim, the USA, Romania dispatched six athletes, winning three gold medals, thanks to Loredana Toma competing in the women's 63 kg category, and a bronze medal thanks to Dumitru Captari, in the men's 77 kg, snatch event.
