Minister Angel Tilvar, attending on Thursday the meeting of NATO Defense Ministers in Brussels, expressed Romania's support for the Alliance's goals regarding the fair sharing of responsibilities.

The event, held at the North Atlantic Alliance headquarters in Brussels, was organized in preparation of the June 24 - 26 NATO Summit in The Hague, dedicated to strengthening the Alliance's deterrence and defense posture, the National Defense Ministry said in a release

According to the cited source, "at the session dedicated to collective defense, Minister Tilvar expressed Romania's support for NATO's fair burden-sharing principle, emphasizing that in the current security context, European states must increase their contribution to NATO deterrence and defense."

The discussions revealed a broad support for this goal, in accordance with the 2025 capability targets, and in this context, the Romanian minister expressed support for the proposals by NATO's Secretary General for increased defense investments, the Defense Ministry further specifies.

Tilvar also highlighted the strategic role of the Black Sea region for the security of the entire Euro-Atlantic space, amid the deterioration of the security environment generated by the Russian Federation's war of aggression against Ukraine.

The discussions also focused on new capability targets, especially on air and missile defense, long-range capabilities, logistics and the strengthening of land forces, as well as on speeding up the allied forces' modernization process.

"Meeting these capabilities development requirements calls for additional financial efforts at NATO level, with the Hague Summit expected to endorse these commitments," the Defense Ministry also said.

The meeting of the Defense ministers represented "an important step in NATO's adjustment and strengthening process," the release states.

"The Hague Summit will bring to the fore a new defense spending plan, aimed at increasing the production of the allied states' defense industry. Romania, together with the other allies, actively contributes to shaping a stronger Alliance, better adapted and prepared to respond to the challenges of the present and the future", the Defense Minister reports.
