Romania will hold the chairmanship of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council this year, the confirmation of the position of chair taking place on Tuesday, at the opening of the organization's annual meeting.
"160 years after the founding of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and 80 years after the founding of the United Nations (UN), Romania is strengthening its international profile in the field of information and communication technologies, as the representative of our country was elected the Chair of the ITU Council for 2025. The confirmation of the position of Chair of the ITU Council took place today on the occasion of the opening of the annual meeting," reads a press release from the National Authority for Administration and Regulation in Communications (ANCOM).
The ITU Council will take place from 17 to 27 June 2025 in Geneva, under the aegis of the General Secretariat of the organization.
According to ANCOM, by exercising this mandate, Romania reaffirms its commitment to the principles of international cooperation in support of technological progress, global connectivity and inclusive digital development.
"At the same time, the ITU 2025 Council Presidency positions Romania as a responsible partner in the international community, facilitating and promoting an environment conducive to dialogue, consensus and multilateral collaboration within the oldest specialized agency of the United Nations," the press release specifies.
Romania has a constant and active presence within the ITU structures, participating in Plenipotentiary Conferences, Council sessions and World Conferences, as well as in working groups, seminars, study groups or other working formats of the three sectors of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) - Radiocommunication (ITU-R), Standardization (ITU-T), and Telecommunication Development (ITU-D).
In the period 2018-2024, Romania coordinated the common European positions and proposals in the ITU Council and World Conferences, as CEPT co-chair - the ITU-recognized regional telecommunications organization for Europe.
"Holding the Presidency of the ITU Council strengthens Romania's image as a proactive and professional member state, built over time, during the eight consecutive terms of office in this forum. The Council brings together representatives of the 48 member states of the Council, elected from all regions of the world, and is the body responsible for overseeing the Union's activities during the period between the Plenipotentiary Conferences, preparing reports on ITU's strategic and political planning, coordinating work programs and approving the Union's budget and finances," the document further states.
