The new Code of Ethics represents an important step in the modernisation of the institution of the Romanian College of Physicians, the president of the Romanian College of Physicians, Catalina Poiana, stated on Wednesday.

"It is the document through which we want to ensure the professional independence of the doctor, the dignity of the doctor. More than that, we want to restore and strengthen public trust in the medical profession and in the doctor and to reposition the connection between the doctor and the patient. I believe that it is a document through which we want to convey that respect for the patient, respect for the doctor and respect for the medical profession must be a priority. It is possible that some formulations may not be the happiest and require more communication and more explanations, maybe even a reformulation, but we are here precisely for this," said Poiana, on Wednesday, in a press conference.

According to the CMR president, the new code is "a set of principles" that doctors must know and respect in the exercise of their profession."

"The code had to be modernised. This code had to be adapted to the realities we live in, it had to be brought into line with the legislative provisions. (...) There are chapters that are found entirely in the legislation in force, namely in the Law No. 95 and in the Patient Rights Law. These are chapters of the law that, in fact, ensure respect for the patient's rights, but also the dignity of the medical profession and its independence," explained the doctor.

In her opinion, a deontological regulation was required that had to come from within the guild.

"We don't want to see advertisements like "We cure cancer" everywhere we go in the city. (...) This code brings some new elements that were absolutely necessary and I would give you an example of just spreading information in the public space that presupposes evidence-based medicine and a whole series of elements that are widely accepted by the academic medical community. We believe it's a basic principle," the president of the CMR pointed out.
