Romanian MEP Siegfried Muresan, nominated by the National Liberal Party (PNL), Save Romania Union (USR) and Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) for the post of prime minister, on Monday defended his record in the European Parliament after the Social Democratic Party (PSD) rejected his candidacy.
Writing on Facebook, Muresan said he had secured "important results" for Romania in the European Parliament, particularly for farmers, and argued that he had contributed to strengthening the rule of law, fighting corruption and supporting Romania's interests within the European Union.
He said that, as the European Parliament's lead negotiator, he helped secure an additional allocation of nearly EUR 50 billion for European farmers in the context of the EU-Mercosur agreement and noted that Parliament's position on the bloc's next long-term budget calls for a 47% increase in funding for the Common Agricultural Policy compared with the European Commission's proposal.
Muresan also highlighted his support for strong transatlantic relations, saying he had made several official visits to the United States over the past 12 years and noting that, at his initiative, PNL joined the International Democrat Union in 2023, a centre-right political alliance that includes the US Republican Party.
Earlier on Monday, PSD said it would not support Muresan's nomination for prime minister, accusing him of lacking credibility and describing him as "profoundly anti-American", while reiterating that it would vote against his appointment.
