Romania delivered an address on Tuesday, in The Hague, at the public hearings on the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) requested by the UN General Assembly on the obligations of states in respect of climate change.
According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE), Romania was part, along with other states, of the core group for the negotiation and promotion of the draft resolution of the UN General Assembly, which requested the International Court of Justice to issue this advisory opinion. In the framework of these procedures, Romania also submitted a written declaration.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes that Romania's participation in these proceedings "reflects the importance attached by Romania to the legal aspects of climate change and its effects, including from the perspective of the phenomenon of rising sea levels, as well as Romania's confidence in the role of the International Court of Justice, the UN's principal judicial body, in clarifying the obligations of states in the field of climate change".
