Romanian fencer Vlad Covaliu on Monday won the silver medal in the junior men's sabre event at the Junior and Cadet Fencing World Championships in Wuxi, China, after losing the final to Italian Cosimo Bertini 12-15.
Covaliu, the main favourite, moved straight to the second round, in which he defeated compatriot Cristian Macovei, 15-7, then Polish Aleksander Denkiewicz, 15-10, Italian Leonardio Reale 15-7, and Egyptian Yassin Khodir in the quarterfinals, 15-11, while in the semi-finals he prevailed over another Pole, Benedykt Denkiewicz, 15-7.
Romania's Cristian Macovei ranked 52nd, Alexandru Eva ranked 87th, and Casian Cadu, 101st.
In the junior women's sabre event, Amalia Covaliu ranked 10th, after losing in the round of 16, 7-15, to the future champion, Mikhailova Aleksandra.
Anastasi Fusea, also defeated in the round of 16, by Italian Mariella Viale, 15-10, took the 12th place.
Catinca Dumitru was the 57th.
The 2025 Junior and Cadet Fencing World Championships take place April 7-15, in Wuxi, China.
