Romania's Jianu progresses to Sarasota Open men's singles R16

Romanian tennis player Filip Cristian Jianu on Monday advanced to the round of 16 of the Sarasota Open challenger tournament in Florida, the U.S., prize money USD 100,000 dollars, after defeating Argentina's Facundo Mena, 4-6 6-4 7-5.

Jianu, 23, world number 233, prevailed in almost three hours of play (2 h 50 min) against eight-seed Mena, 32 years, world number 186 . Mena led 3-0 in the second set after winning the first set.

Jianu, the highest ranked Romanian in the ATP standings, won USD 1,685 and 6 ATP singles points.

Jianu's next opponent will be Estonian Mark Lajal, 21, world number 200 ATP. The Romanian won his only one-on-one with Lajal, 3-6 6-3 7-6 (7/5), in the first round of the Oeiras Open (Portugal).

Compatriot Gabi Adrian Boitan, 25, world number 370, qualified to the singles main draw, after a 6-3 6-2 win against American Strong Kirchheimer and a 6-4 3-6 6-1 win against Jamaican Blaise Bicknell.

Boitan won USD 1,045 and 4 ATP singles points, and in the first round he will face American Tyler Zink, 24, world number 374.
