Romania's natural population change remained negative (-7,081) in October 2025, with the number of deaths 1.5 times higher than that of live births, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INS) published on Wednesday.

In October 2025, 13,528 birth certificates were issued, down by 1,092 (-7.5%) compared with September 2025. The number of live births was 1,689 (+14.3%) higher compared with the same month in 2024.

Meanwhile, 20,609 death certificates were registered in October 2025 (10,721 for men and 9,888 for women), 1,776 more than in September 2025, representing an increase of 9.4% (+8% for men and +11.1% for women).

For children under 1 year old, 70 deaths were recorded in October 2025, an increase of 7 compared with September 2025.

In urban areas, 10,380 deaths were recorded (5,372 men and 5,008 women), while in rural areas there were 10,229 deaths (5,349 men and 4,880 women).

Compared with the same month in 2024, the number of deaths increased by 3.3% in urban areas (+2.8% men, +4% women) and by 2.9% in rural areas (+1.5% men, +4.5% women).

Overall, the natural population change was negative both in October 2025 (-7,081 people) and in October 2024 (-8,144 people).

In October 2025, 42.7% (8,801 deaths) of all deaths occurred among people aged 80 and over, 27.5% (5,667 deaths) among those aged 70-79, and 15.6% (3,224 deaths) among people aged 60-69. The fewest deaths were recorded in the 0-4 years (89 deaths), 5-19 years (43 deaths), and 20-29 years (96 deaths) age groups.
