Romania's Ruse reaches Libema Open women's singles R16

Romanian tennis player Gabriela Ruse on Tuesday advanced to the round of 16 of the women's singles event at the Libema Open WTA 250 tournament in 's-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands, prize money EUR 246,388 , after defeating Germany's Tamara Korpatsch 6-4 7-6 (7/5).

Ruse, 28, ranked 88th, prevailed in two hours and three minutes, in which she managed three aces, but also committed nine double faults.

The Romanian is now 4-1 in the head-to-head matchup against Korpatsch, 31, ranked 79th, with her opponent's only victory coming in the final of the Transylvania Open in 2023, 6-3 6-4.

For reaching the round of 16, Ruse won EUR 4,000 and 30 WTA singles points, and in the round of 16 she will face defending champion Elise Mertens of Belgium, this year's third seed, who defeated Bianca Andreescu 6-1 6-2.

Mertens, 30, ranked 22nd, is 4-0 in the head-to-head matchup against Ruse, including in last year's final at 's-Hertogenbosch, 6-3 7-6 (7/4).
