Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Florin-Ionut Barbu, said on Wednesday in Targu Mures, during a meeting with the Federation of Cattle Breeders in Romania, that the National Natural Gas Company Romgaz is in talks with Azomures to take over the assets of the chemical plant, as that can keep the cost of methane gas at extraction prices.
"Azomures is in talks with Romgaz to take over Azomures' assets. I believe that this project will be carried out and, moving forward, Romgaz must take over the assets because if you take over the company completely, you enter the state aid scheme for gas that you have to give to that company. Romgaz will also take the assets, buy the assets and integrate the gas at the price they have during extraction. If we talk from a technical point of view about the use of fertilisers in Romania, Azomures can produce - if we respect the technical part with the amount of substance normally given per hectare - somewhere at 60-70% (...). You realise that when you have 60% of the production and you have a fertiliser price through a state-owned company, you can also regulate the import part that comes from other countries. That is, somehow to balance the price so that we no longer have a monopoly on what comes from exports (...). I say that it will be taken over by Romgaz," said Barbu when asked by a farmer about the resumption of the production of chemical fertilisers in Targu Mures.
Barbu said that ever since he was the chairman of the agriculture committee of the Chamber of Deputies, discussions were advanced with Azomures on the takeover of the assets by Romgaz.
Romgaz has published an announcement in the Electronic Public Procurement System (SEAP) for consultancy services in the evaluation, negotiation and acquisition of Azomures' assets, Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja announced on March 14.
According to Burduja, this strategic move aims to diversify Romgaz's portfolio and expand on a production segment that will give Romanian gas a higher added value, including the resources extracted from the Neptun Deep project in the Black Sea.
Romgaz Director General Razvan Popescu told ZF Power Summit 2025 on February 26, that the company's analysis of the takeover of the chemical plant is complex, as the company was looking not only at a single plant, but at the entire fertiliser market in Romania.
