Senate head and interim Chairman of the National Liberal Party (PNL) Ilie Bolojan termed on Monday the opposition's move toward suspending President Klaus Iohannis from office as a "political game" which most likely won't get to be voted on in Parliament.

"There are three aspects here. The first one is this being a political game. After ten years in office, President Iohannis's level of confidence has indeed plunged, and as such anyone who criticizes him, anyone who asks him to step down from this temporary position before the May election is knocking on already open doors of the public opinion. Those who request his suspension and withdrawal are doing a political game, with the upcoming presidential election and the consolidation of their public image in mind. (...) The second aspect is related to the calendar of the potential suspension. Presuming that this suspension procedure takes place through Parliament, and assuming that the referendum actually passes, we would exceed the date set for the presidential election, therefore it's a nonsense since we already have the presidential calendar established and we know that the first round is on May 4 and the second round on the 18th. Pursuing this procedure would only result in new presidential elections, but after this date. If somehow it could be carried out faster, let's say that it would buy us a few more months. Last but not least, it's a matter of responsibility towards our country," Bolojan told Euronews.

He pointed out that Romania is in a tight corner as regards the budget and any political instability translates into financial costs for the country.

"From the point of view of responsibility, voting on this is out of question, but not because we would support President Klaus Iohannis, but rather out of responsibility for Romania, because this does not help us at all," the PNL leader said.

Bolojan was also asked about the scenario of President Iohannis resigning his mandate and the Senate head becoming caretaker president.

"Such a hypothesis is a different situation that does not interfere with the elections, in the sense that the date is clearly established, but it is one thing for this process to take place normally - and this depends on the decision of a certain person - and it's something else to speculate on a situation of aversion, of lack of support to play on politically. The concern for stability and responsibility comes from Romania's situation," the PNL interim Chairman said.

The Young People's Party (POT) announced last week that 161 POT, AUR and SOS lawmakers signed for the suspension of President Klaus Iohannis, and the signatures were submitted to the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies.
