World No. 7, Romanian Simona Halep progressed on Wednesday to the quarterfinals of the Eastbourne International grass-court tournament featuring 998,712 US dollars in prize money, as she defeated Slovenia's Polona Hercog 6-1 4-6 6-3.
Halep (27) claimed the victory in one hour and 48 minutes.
Halep now leads 2-1 in the head-to-head encounters with Hercog (aged 28, WTA's No. 60), as the latter won 7-6 (3) 1-6 6-2 in the first round of the 2009 Sofia ITF tournament, while Halep defeated her 5-7 7-6 (1) 6-2 this year in the third round of the Miami Open.
Simona Halep secured a 23,455-US dollar cheque and 100 WTA points and will play in the quarterfinals Germany's Angelique Kerber (age 31, World No. 5), who defeated Sweden's Rebecca Peterson 7-6 (4) 6-0.
