An outbreak of African swine fever has been confirmed at a farm with approximately 6,000 pigs in the commune of Cermei (Arad County), requiring the preventive culling of 1,500 animals in the first phase.

The director of the Arad Sanitary, Veterinary and Food Safety Directorate (DSVSA), Marcel Rosu, declared on Thursday for AGERPRES that, given the structure of the affected farm, a separation into two areas can be achieved, with the animals from the first area, where the virus was identified, being approximately 1,500 heads, being slaughtered in the first phase.

"If the virus spreads to the second area, the remaining pigs on the farm, approximately 4,500, will also be culled. The animal carcasses will be neutralized by the alternative method of burial," said Marcel Rosu.

The Arad Local Center for Disease Control has also approved other measures in the Cermei area to prevent the spread of the disease. A three-kilometer protection zone has been established around the outbreak and a 10-kilometer surveillance zone has been established.

The monitoring zone also includes several large pig farms.

The head of the Arad DSVSA also stated that the pigs will be clinically examined in the area, and the movement and transport of these animals on public or private roads has been prohibited.

At end-December, the last active plague outbreak of 2025, also at a farm in the Olari commune, was declared closed. Over 5,600 animals were killed here as a precaution.
