Deputy Prime Minister Tanczos Barna said on Wednesday that early elections are "extremely unlikely" and that a new government must be formed within the current Parliament, as parties have so far focused more on what they refuse to do than on building a majority.
"Early elections are unlikely. They have never happened in Romania and it is extremely unlikely they will happen now. We must find a solution within the current parliamentary framework," Barna said. He added that the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) will discuss its position in the party leadership later in the day.
Tanczos noted that both PNL and USR have announced their intention to move into opposition and that UDMR must take this into account. He also recalled President Nicusor Dan's statement that he does not want a government involving AUR. "We will certainly not be part of a government that has AUR support. The options that remain are on the table. At the moment, everyone has said what they will not do," he said.
UDMR is now waiting for formal and informal consultations at Cotroceni. "Perhaps a version will crystallize after these consultations, even informal ones, with President Nicusor Dan," added the Deputy Prime Minister. However, he cautioned that "there are too few variables from which to build" a governing formula at this stage.
Asked about PSD leaders' suggestion of a government including UDMR and minorities, supported by non-affiliated MPs, Tanczos Barna replied that "it depends on mathematics", noting that any majority must be verified meticulously. He recalled that UDMR joined the 2024 coalition with PSD and PNL to ensure a pro-European majority during a difficult fiscal period. "I hope these negotiations will be much rarer. Changing governments every few months does not help the economy or Romania's credibility," he said.
The UDMR official also had good words for outgoing Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. "I personally worked very well with Mr. Bolojan. I have nothing to reproach him. Inevitably, misunderstandings occur in daily activity, but they are solvable," he said, while acknowledging PSD's decision that it could no longer work with the prime minister.
The UDMR vice-president warned that forming a new government will take time. "It will take weeks, for sure. It will not end overnight. We do not have a crystallized majority solution today," he explained.
Tanczos Barna made the statements while attending the Traditional Products Fair at the Ministry of Agriculture.
