At a ceremony held on Wednesday at the headquarters of the Ministry of Defense, Minister Angel Tilvar handed the Romanian flag to the captain of the wounded military service members' team that will represent Romania at this year's edition of the Vancouver and Whistler 2025 Invictus Games, chief master sergeant (ret.) Daniel Porumb.

Minister Tilvar assured the Invictus competitors of the full support of the Defense Ministry's leadership and reiterated that they represent a model for the entire society.

"Just like in the theaters of operations, keep on being the best ambassadors of the Romanian Army! I assure you that you will have by your side the entire leadership team of the National Defense Ministry for you to achieve all your proposed goals. Your performances induce positive effects in society, continuing to teach us the much-needed lessons of will, perseverance and solidarity, fair play and resilience," the minister said, as cited in a release.

Angel Tilvar also thanked the families, coaches and technical staff for the permanent support offered to the wounded service men and women.

"I am glad to see with you the families and friends who have certainly contributed greatly to this journey of yours to the Vancouver Games. Thank you for encouraging and supporting them to prepare as they wished for this competition, and for the effort you put in every day, alongside the athletes," the minister said.

"As captain of the team, I assure you that we will do everything in our power to bring glory to our country, as we did at previous Invictus Games editions, but also in theaters of operations, and that we will honor with all our might the trust you place in us," said chief master sergeant (ret.) Daniel Porumb, captain of Invictus Team Romania.

Attending the event that preceded the team's departure for Canada were also Secretary of State Simona Cojocaru, Chief of Defense Staff, General Gheorghita Vlad, heads of central structures of the Defense Ministry, the coaches and technical staff of the team, family members of the athletes.

The Invictus Games is an international multi-sport event first held in 2014, for wounded, injured and sick military service personnel, both serving and veterans, which aims to raise awareness among the civil society about the recognition due to the fighters injured in military actions.

Now in its seventh edition, the event will take place February 8 to 16 in Vancouver and Whistler in Canada, bringing together over 500 competitors from 23 nations around the world.

Romania is at its fifth participation in the Invictus Games, with a team made up of 19 wounded personnel who will compete in seven individual adaptive sports disciplines, namely alpine skiing, snowboarding, Nordic skiing, curling, skeleton, swimming, indoor rowing, and one team discipline - sitting volleyball.

The delegation that will accompany the Romanian team in Canada will be led by Defense Staff Director, Major General Valentin Brinzei.
