Romanian tennis player Jaqueline Cristian qualified for the semifinals of the WTA 250 tournament in Osaka (Japan), which has total prizes of 275,094 US dollars, after Japanese Naomi Osaka, seed no. 1, was forced to abandon before their scheduled match, on Friday, in the quarterfinals.

''We regret to announce that Naomi Osaka did not recover from a left foot injury suffered in the second round and that she withdrew from the quarterfinals scheduled today,'' the organisers announced on the X platform.

The former world leader ended the match she won in the round of 16 against Dutch Suzan Lamens (57 WTA), the holder of the trophy, in tears, on Wednesday, in Osaka.

It would have been the first confrontation between Jaqueline Cristian (27 years old, 47 WTA) and Naomi Osaka (27 years old, 16 WTA).

Cristian won a cheque worth 11,970 dollars and 98 WTA points for reaching this far in the competition, and she is going to play next against the winner between Czech Tereza Valentova and Serbian Olga Danilovic, seed no. 6.

Also on Friday, Sorana Cirstea meets Swiss Viktorija Golubic in the quarterfinals.
