Simona Halep, WTA's No 4, was designated the best tennis player of 2016 within the Romanian Tennis Gala, an event which took place on Sunday evening, at the Fratelli Club in Bucharest.
The leadership of the Romanian Tennis Federation also awarded the best performance of the Romanian tennis in the Olympic Games, namely the silver medal won by Horia Tacau and Florin Mergea in the doubles event in Rio de Janeiro, as well as the best ranked Romanian player in the ATP's singles ranking, Marius Copil, who takes the 132nd place.
The prizes awarded within the gala were the following:
The best junior player under 14 years in Europe - Radu Mihai Papoe.
The best ascent in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) circuit - Smaranda Oana Corneanu.
The best ascent in seniors - Elena Gabriela Ruse.
The award for special performances in 2016 - Irina Begu.
The best ascent in doubles - Monica Niculescu.
The best ranked player in singles - Marius Copil.
The best performance in Romanian tennis in the Olympic Games - Horia Tecau and Florin Mergea.
The best player of 2016 - Simona Halep.
