Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) Senator Tanczos Barna and the "Lets' Do It!" Romania Association opened on Monday at the Palace of Parliament a photo exhibition called "The Importance of a Clean Environment" on the subject of creating by law a National Cleanup Day.
The Senate has passed the bill initiated by the UDMR senator that formalises the cleanup actions on the third Saturday of September each year and promotes responsible waste management, and the bill is currently awaiting the decision of the Chamber of Deputies. The new piece of legislation provides, among other things, that public administrations and bodies can organise and allocate funds for activities to promote good practices and the importance of maintaining a clean environment. In addition, public television and radio stations may include awareness programmes in their programmes.
"What we are doing now is a cross-party issue, it is a matter that transcends both governments and ministerial mandates and political parties, it is an initiative for Romania, for a clean country and I am convinced that even this bill, after it becomes law, will contribute to that. Since 2021, we have started many projects that transcend both governments and mandates of ministers and political parties. (...) Selective collection can be improved through those digitised centres or those digitised areas where waste is brought to the cities. The deposit-return system is a perfect example of a cross-party collaboration that transcends governments. It is a first initiative on the part of Minister Fechet, taken over by me as minister and continued by Mr Fechet as minister and we see the results. This month we will probably reach a 50% recovery rate and, although there is a lot of work, although we need to improve and even modify some aspects, it is certainly the best solution to rid the country of garbage. (...) Let's turn Romania into a clean country!" said Tanczos.
He added that "Lets' Do It!" Romania has been working as a non-governmental organisation for 15 years and year after year it organises actions with huge cleanup efforts, actions to which people are invited both from rural and urban areas who want to contribute to a cleaner country, want to transform Romania into a cleaner country.
"The initiative is their proposal, I am the initiator in Parliament and my colleagues from UDMR joined me, but I must also thank my colleagues from the other parties, from all political parties in Parliament - PSD, PNL, USR, AUR - who came up and signed and supported this bill. The bill, once turned into law and published in the Official Journal, will allow local administrations to organise even more actions on the penultimate Saturday of September, which will be declared the National Cleanup Day; they can allocate funds or organise awareness-raising, accountability actions, actions that transform the new generations into generations that really care for the environment."
Tanczos added that the pictures exhibited in the foyer of the Chamber of Deputies are "the pictures of reality", they are "the pictures of Romania today". "It is up to us to be responsible, up to us to become aware of how much harm we do to nature if we discard garbage everywhere and how easy it is to be much more careful and responsible and to selectively collect and take the waste to the right place."
