The two Ukrainians who tried, a week ago, to set fire to the headquarters of a company in Bucharest on behalf of Russia remain in preventive custody.
Shcherbakov Vadym and Filipchuk Bohdan were placed in preventive custody on October 16 by the Bucharest Court of Appeal, the decision being upheld on Tuesday by the High Court of Cassation and Justice.
According to the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI), two Ukrainian citizens entered Romania from Poland and deposited at the headquarters of the Nova Post company in Bucharest two packages containing remotely initiated incendiary devices, handmade, concealed in audio headphones and car parts, respectively GPS location monitoring components.
Nova Post is a Ukrainian company that operates in the field of parcel delivery, with representatives in 13 European countries. The company's headquarters in Bucharest are located on Unirii Boulevard, on the ground floor of a block of flats.
Romanian investigators say that, if a fire had broken out at the company's headquarters, it could have easily spread to the surrounding buildings.
With the support of pyrotechnic specialists from the Romanian Intelligence Service, the devices were defused, and the two saboteurs were detained.
"The data obtained confirms the affiliation of the two Ukrainian citizens to an extensive network of saboteurs targeting European countries, controlled by the Russian secret services. Their actions fall within the same operational pattern that targets the extensive infrastructure of the Nova Post company - the largest private Ukrainian courier company. The specific actions undertaken by the SRI, as well as the measures taken with the Romanian authorities and foreign partners, led to the prevention of an attempted sabotage on national territory," the SRI announced at the time.
