Scenarios according to which Romania could be hit by a massive power outage such as the one in Spain, although they seem to belong to the realm of science fiction, should be seriously considered by those who deal with emergency situations, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Sorin Grindeanu declared on Tuesday when asked by journalists if Romania could cope with a situation similar to that triggered by the massive power disruption in Spain.
"It's a situation that, if it hits out of the blue, you need some time to get used to. Every state institution has an emergency situations committee that carries out periodic training sessions. (...) They are the ones who deal with these issues and they keep in contact with the other state institutions, with the other committees of this type in the other state institutions. What is for sure is that we must prepare for such occurrences and be aware that they can happen. Talk about war in Europe 10 years ago would probably have seemed like some sci-fi hypothesis. And yet for three years now we've had a war in Europe, at the borders of Romania. Situations of this type, which again seem like science fiction, should be seriously considered by those responsible, because they appear to be part of reality. And we must be prepared," explained Sorin Grindeanu.
In his opinion, in the event of a blackout in Romania, the trains running on the electrified network and the metro would not work, and air traffic "would be messed up", as would be public transportation. "Those who fix this blackout need to handle these issues. I think there's the key. And we should be prepared to shorten the power outage period, that's the reasonable answer," Sorin Grindeanu said.
Peninsular Spain and Portugal were hit by a massive power outage on Monday, starting at 12:30 (10:30 GMT), which caused multiple issues in public transport, the economic activity and the lives of citizens.
Spain had recovered more than 95 percent of the total supply by 6.30 a.m. on Tuesday, and in Portugal the power had been restored to all the substations of the country's grid by the same time.
