The President of UDMR (Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania), Kelemen Hunor, stated that his party considers the main solution to be the re-establishment of the governing coalition that had been in place until a month ago - made up of PSD (Social Democratic Party), PNL (National Liberal Party), USR (Save Romania Union), UDMR and the group of national minorities. He specified that UDMR had not been invited to the consultations at Cotroceni Presidential Palace yet.

'I would like to thank my colleagues who during this period have been and still are in Government (...) and all the ministers with whom I have worked during this time, because it has been an extremely difficult period, one in which our main objective was to balance the country's finances, keep the budget within acceptable limits and reduce the deficit. (...) Yesterday's vote was a very clear one, a very large majority, over 280 votes, to dismiss the Government, and of course a solution to appoint a new government must also be found in Parliament. All solutions must remain on the table; ultimately, there is no undemocratic solution, because behind every MP, behind every party or political formation, there are votes, and those votes must be respected - the vote of every citizen. Our preferred option, before any other discussion, would be to restore the coalition that functioned until a month ago, namely PSD, PNL, USR, UDMR and the group of national minorities,' Kelemen Hunor said în Parliament, Agerpres informs.

He reiterated that a formula ensuring a parliamentary majority is needed, with a prime minister accepted by all parties.

'I would not consider any minority arrangement at this stage, because we have seen that even a majority coalition functions with difficulty. So I would look at a majority formula or one that can ensure a parliamentary majority for a government - a very clear and transparent majority, without having to negotiate every day, for every bill, with each individual vote in the Romanian Parliament. We are waiting to be invited to discussions with President Dan; we have not yet been contacted, and we are also awaiting discussions with our colleagues from PNL, PSD, USR, and with the group led by Mr Pambuccian. We have not yet spoken to anyone since yesterday, when the vote against the government led by Ilie Bolojan took place,' Kelemen Hunor emphasised.

The UDMR leader argued for the urgent identification of a political figure capable of uniting the political forces.

'Party membership is not the issue. The quality of the individual matters, not whether they hold a party card. What matters is that they know how to manage a political crisis, a governmental crisis and, ultimately, a budgetary crisis,' he added.

Asked whether UDMR might take part in a government formed with only one of the major parties, with reference to AUR, Kelemen Hunor replied: 'If it is with a single party, then we will not be part of it. (...) There is no discussion in this regard. These are all speculations. (...) From the very beginning, I ruled out any option involving AUR.'

Kelemen Hunor also stated that early elections will not be reached, considering that they could lead to a long period of governance by AUR.

'Here I agree with the President that we will not reach early elections. We should not reach early elections. (...) But I believe that if we were to go to early elections today, it would mean handing the country's governance to AUR for a long period. We must recognise that they currently have the broadest support. The 2024 vote was for four years. Therefore, those who obtained the citizens' votes then and formed a government in 2024, and afterwards in 2025, have a responsibility to the citizens to find a solution now as well,' said Kelemen Hunor.'
