The Save Romania Union (USR) is holding on Saturday an extraordinary congress that is to elect the members of the formation's National Bureau and the party's candidate for president.

600 delegates are expected to attend the meeting.

USR's Electoral Commission greenlighted on Thursday three bids for the party's presidential candidate: Elena Lasconi, Dumitru Stanca, and Octavian Berceanu.

52-year-old Elena Lasconi is a trained economist and has a 25-year career in television. Since 2020 she has been serving as mayor of the Campulung Muscel municipality, a position in which she was re-elected in 2024. Dumitru Stanca is 59 and is a reserve officer, currently working as a compliance officer at a private company in Bucharest. He deals with ensuring the compliance of in-house regulations and procedures with the anti-money laundering law. Octavian-Alexandru Berceanu is 48 years old and is an engineer by profession. He works as a consultant for the European Investment Bank in Moldova's Forest Expansion and Rehabilitation National Program (PNERP) and coordinates the activity of the working group for the reform of the forestry sector. During the PNL-USR government Berceanu served as a General Commissioner with the National Environmental Guard.

USR spokesman Ionut Mosteanu announced that approximately 200 people registered for one of the 24 seats in the National Bureau, on various lists or as independents.

In the aftermath of the June 9 local and European parliamentary elections, USR Chairman Catalin Drula stepped down from the party's helm. After his resignation, ten USR members submitted their candidacy for party leader, among them Elena Lasconi and Cristian Seidler.

Elena Lasconi was elected USR Chairperson by direct vote cast online by each party member, as stipulated by the party's statute.
