Usury in Romania will be punished by imprisonment of up to five years, according to a law promulgated on Monday by President Nicusor Dan.
The new piece of legislation amends Article 351 of Law 286/2009 on the Criminal Code, saying that "giving money with interest, as an occupation, by an u nauthorised person" is a crime and is punishable by imprisonment from six months to five years.
The law also provides for the special confiscation of the amounts of money given as loans, as well as of the interest obtained. The measure applies even when the interest is included in the amounts subsequently borrowed, according to the Criminal Code.
