Former Prime Minister and national leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Victor Ponta told Romania TV private broadcaster on Sunday that he wants to run for a seat in Parliament on PSD's tickets and will do so if nominated by the party."If PSD nominates me, I will certainly run. (...) I do not need anyone begging me to. I want to run for a seat in Parliament on PSD's tickets," said Ponta in reply to whether or not he has officially decided to run in this autumn's general election.
Dragnea începe marșul trădării
Asked whether or not he and his PSD colleagues who made up his Cabinet while in office are sought to be isolated inside the party, Ponta said that he does not feel that way.
"No, I do not feel isolated at all. To be honest, it would have been hard for anyone to isolate me. I was wondering why what I say is being heard, what Mr Basescu says is being heard, while the others are utterly silent. What is it that Mr [President Klaus] Iohannis will say to be noticed or Mr [Prime Minister Dacian] Ciolos, for that matter? And so we, the ones that criticise - Mr [Senate Chairman] Tariceanu at al - are at an advantage," said Ponta.
Mircea Badea, IRONIE la adresa lui Predoiu: Știți cu cine seamănă? Eu am avut un șoc
To the remark that PSD national leader Liviu Dragnea "is being heard, yet more faintly" in public statements, Ponta said, "We have a party leader (...) I am free now." "I myself was more reserved when speaking in the name of the entire party. Now, I am speaking on my behalf, a freedom, a luxury that I did not have over the past six years," said Ponta.
The former prime minister said his relationship with Dragnea is perfectly normal.
He added that he will get involved in the PSD general election campaign, as he did in the campaign for this June's local elections.
"When PSD needs me, as was the case in the local elections and will probably be the case in the general election, I will be here because after all PSD has done a lot for me. I have never been in other party and I cannot picture myself in other party, and I do want to join other party," said Ponta, according agerpres.ro.
