The video game development industry in Romania registered a turnover of 343.16 million euro last year, marking an increase of around 8% compared to the previous year, according to a report conducted by the Romanian Game Developers Association (RGDA) and Banca Transilvania.

At a global level, revenues from the gaming industry reached 187.7 billion dollars.

The game development industry of Romania remains dynamic and diverse, currently encompassing 206 active studios. The capital, Bucharest, hosts the majority, with 98 studios, followed by regional hubs such as Cluj (32), Iasi (12), Ilfov (8), Timis (7) and Brasov (4). Another 45 studios operate in various other counties across the country. Around 6,100 professionals are employed in the sector, a slightly lower figure than in 2023, but overall productivity has increased, exceeding 56,000 euro per employee.

'The Romanian video game development industry returned to growth in 2024, surpassing 343 million euro. This is an important signal of stability and maturity, confirming that the local ecosystem has the ability to navigate a difficult global context and generate added value once again. It is essential to consolidate this evolution and turn it into accelerated growth by encouraging the production of original games made in Romania,' said RGDA President Alexandru Chica, as quoted in the release.

The share of multinational companies, which accounted for 89% of revenues in 2015, dropped to 70% in 2024, while the services sector has grown to 18%. Meanwhile, studios developing original IPs (intellectual properties) saw the most significant growth, now accounting for 12% of total revenues, three times more than a decade ago.

'The data on the structure of companies in the local industry shows that the sector is maturing. It is a healthy evolution, as it indicates diversification and the fact that Romanian studios are increasingly developing their own products with global potential,' said RGDA Executive Director Andreea Medvedovici Per.
