Wholesale trade turnover down 1.6% as gross series in January-February 2026

Wholesale trade turnover (except for the trade of motor vehicles and motorcycles) fell by 1.6% in gross terms in the first two months of this year compared with the same period in 2025, according to data published on Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

According to official statistics, in the period January 1 - February 28, 2026, decreases were recorded in non-specialised wholesale trade (-10.5%), wholesale trade of raw agricultural products and livestock (-5.5%), wholesale trade of food, beverages and tobacco (-5.1%), wholesale trade of other machinery, equipment and supplies (-4.6%), and wholesale trade of information technology and telecommunications equipment (-1.8%).

By contrast, increases were recorded in wholesale trade intermediation activities (+12.2%), wholesale trade of consumer goods other than food (+1.5%), and specialised wholesale trade of other products (+1.1%).

As an adjusted series, considering the number of business days and seasonality, the wholesale trade turnover (except for the motor vehicles and motorcycles) rose overall by 0.4% during the analysed period.

Compared with February 2025, the wholesale trade turnover in February 2026, in gross terms, remained at the same level, with increases in wholesale trade intermediation activities (+18.5%), specialised wholesale trade of other products (+4.8%), and wholesale trade of consumer goods other than food (+1.3%).

On the other hand, decreases were recorded in wholesale trade of other machinery, equipment and supplies (-6.8%), non-specialised wholesale trade (-5.4%), wholesale trade of food, beverages and tobacco (-4.3%), wholesale trade of information technology and telecommunications equipment (-3.6%), and wholesale trade of raw agricultural products and livestock (-2.9%).

Year on year, turnover in the same segment, as an adjusted series, increased by 1.9%.

According to the same source, in the second month of the current year, wholesale trade turnover (except for motor vehicles and motorcycles) increased both in gross terms (+12.6%) and as an adjusted series (+0.6%) compared with January.
