The Young People's Party (POT) demands the immediate adoption of an emergency ordinance to organize the second round of the presidential elections on March 2.
''POT demands the second round on March 2! The statement of the American Vice President J.D. Vance confirms our fears: Romanian democracy has been undermined by an arbitrary decision. The suspension of the elections based on 'weak suspicions' is unacceptable. We demand the immediate adoption of an emergency ordinance to organize the second round on March 2!'', the party's president, Anamaria Gavrila said on Friday in a post on her Facebook account.
The will of the people must be respected, the POT representatives also say.
The American Vice President J.D. Vance accused the U.S.'s European allies on Friday of censoring freedom of expression and undermining democratic values, in a speech at the Munich Security Conference, criticizing the position of a former European commissioner who welcomed the annulment of the presidential elections in Romania.
''The threat I worry most about vis-a-vis Europe is not Russia, it is not China, it is not any other external actor. What I fear is that the threat comes from within: Europe's retreat from some of its most fundamental values, values shared with the U.S.," J.D. Vance said at the beginning of his speech.
''I was struck that a former European commissioner went on television recently and sounded delighted that the Romanian government had just annulled an entire election. He warned that if things don't go as planned, the very same thing could happen in Germany too. These cavalier statements are shocking to American ears. (...) When we see European courts canceling elections and senior officials threatening to cancel others, we ought to ask whether we're holding ourselves to an appropriately high standard. In fact, we must do more than talk about democratic values, we must live them now,'' the U.S. vice president pointed out.
