A 28-year-old Ukrainian citizen who crossed the border into Romania through the Maramures Mountains, along with two other people, was found dead by mountain rescuers near the alpine border, according to director of the Salvamont Maramures County Public Service (SPJ) Dan Benga.

According to him, the other two people who were part of the same group descended from the mountain to request help from the Romanian authorities.

"The other two Ukrainians who alerted emergency services at 112 said that the third person, the 28-year-old, the subject of the search and rescue operation, had medical issues and could no longer move, so they decided to descend more quickly to ask for help. Unfortunately, the 28-year-old did not have his mobile phone on, and there was no location where he could be found," Dan Benga explained.

A support team of six mountain rescuers was formed to ascend the mountain and extract the victim.

The action also involved criminalists from the National Police and border police officers.

"After the mountain rescuers, together with colleagues from the Border Police, ascended all night (from Tuesday to Wednesday), they found the 28-year-old Ukrainian citizen. Unfortunately, he was found dead about 200 metres from the border on the Romanian side. The extraction will be done on foot - there is no possibility to use a helicopter, and for the extraction, a roll-up stretcher, a special extraction stretcher, will be used as the only equipment that can be used downhill in the valley, and the operation will last around 10-12 hours," said Dan Benga.
