Academician Danaila, at seniors' gala: I haven't come here for glory, but for people's good
Academician Leon Danaila spoke on Thursday at the "Seniors of Collection" Gala about how people should behave for a better quality of life, a healthy brain and to delay aging, told Agerpres.
He told the seniors present that he came to the event to help them, not for personal glory, and gave them some copies of his book "Neuroplasticity," recently published by the Academy, in which the author shows how to act on the brain, so that the individual, with advancing age, does not develop memory, attention, judgment or reasoning deficiencies and may lead a healthy life.
"I haven't come here for glory, I came for the good of the people, to help them as much as I can. For this there are some pillars of health and in this comes proper nutrition (...). Food is very important, the Mediterranean diet - that is, the individual must eat fish, seafood, vegetables, fruit - which is very good and has given very good results. (...) Ageing from 65 to 85 is normal ageing, after 85, super ageing. Apart from diet, exercise is very good, at least walking. If you walk 2,000 steps every day it's still good. Apart from that, sacredness, namely faith, is very important. Have faith in what you do, in what you want to achieve and pray to God, because prayer has three roles: one of request, one of thanksgiving to God and one of praise to God," said Danaila.
He said that it is very important for people to have a sense of gratitude, to avoid depression, which could weaken the immune system.
"The individual, if he or she does not have contentment in his soul, is depressed, it is not good, because depression can lead to a decrease in immunity and the appearance of various diseases. Depression has also been found to lead to cancer. Then there's satisfaction. If you don't have satisfaction in activity and optimism, it's not good. Then moral support - you need to have people around you who agree with one's ideas and support you in your work," Leon Danaila said.
The renowned neurosurgeon added that sleep is very important for a healthy brain.
An outstanding personality of Romanian and world neurosurgery, the 90-year-old academician Leon Danaila was the guest of honour at the 11th edition of the "Seniors of Collection" Gala, organised by the National Institute for Active Ageing Association.
