Nearly 600 drivers of right-hand drive vehicles were fined by traffic police for various violations, including technical defects and speeding.
According to a statement from the Romanian Police, an analysis showed that nationwide, between 2020 and 2025, around 84% of the accidents involving vehicles with the steering wheel on the right occurred because the drivers failed to comply with legal traffic rules.
On February 19, traffic police carried out nationwide checks in response to the trend of accidents involving right-hand drive vehicles. During the operation, 865 such vehicles were inspected - 461 registered in Romania and 404 registered abroad.
Following the violations identified, 595 fines were issued: 567 for breaches of Government Emergency Ordinance 195/2002 on public road traffic, and 28 for violations of other regulations. Of these, 42 fines were issued for technical deficiencies found in right-hand drive vehicles.
Police also issued 102 fines for speeding and 5 for illegal overtaking.
In addition, 21 driving licenses and 49 registration certificates were suspended, and officers recorded three road-traffic offenses and three other criminal offenses.
