As many as 2,046 companies suspended their activity in January 2026, up by 19.93% from the same period of 2025, shows data released by the National Companies Registry Office (ONRC).
Most companies that put their business on hold in the reporting period were from Bucharest, specifically 255 (by 34.21% more compared to the year-ago period). Next by the same token were the counties of Cluj (112, +16.67%), Iasi (98, +25.64%), Sibiu (98, +53.97%), Bihor (92, - 4.17%), Brasov (87, +29.85%), Arges (76, +49.02%) and Timis (75, +33.93%).
At the opposite end, the fewest business suspensions this January were recorded in the counties of Giurgiu (6, down by 68.42% YoY), Tulcea (10, -54.55%), Ialomita (12, +100%), Caras-Severin (14, +27.27%), Braila (14, -36.36%), and Teleorman (14, - 12.5%).
The sharpest increases in business suspensions were recorded in Galati (+166.67%), Botosani (+106.67%) and Ialomita (+100%), while the steepest declines were in Giurgiu (-68.42%), Tulcea (-54.55%) and Vrancea (-50%).
By sector, the highest number of suspensions occurred in wholesale and retail trade (233), followed by other service activities (164) and professional, scientific and technical activities (125).
