Acting President Ilie Bolojan stated on Monday about the entry into the Visa Waiver Program for U.S. visas that there may be a delay and stressed that Romania has respected all the conditions that were agreed upon.

"The change of administration brought about a change, let's say, of policy regarding migration. One of the important themes that the Trump administration backed both during the campaign period and afterwards was limiting illegal migration to the United States, as it is known that it was an important topic in this campaign. As we have seen, President Trump insisted immediately after winning the elections on this topic. And practically, the activity of those at Home Security was focused on this area and it is possible that we will indeed have a postponement, but from this point of view Romania has respected all the conditions that were agreed on. We have made the databases available in such a way that there is a verification as clear as possible. And I believe that by the end of this week we will have an announcement on this topic", Bolojan told Antena 1 TV station.

He specified that there are channels of communication with the United States, with which Romania has a strategic relationship.

"We have communication channels, but we must continue to work, because the relationship with the United States of America is a strategic relationship for Romania and regardless of the administration in Washington, we must strengthen this relationship, and the Trump administration has come up with some new approaches, which we must face. Think, for example, that it was said - and I think it is a correct thing - that all European countries should increase their contributions in such a way as to assume a greater part of Europe's defense. (...) We have important defense contracts with the United States of America. We have prepared programs with NATO, which will continue without any problems this year. So we must continue to develop this strategic partnership, including the economic component, and it is a strategic direction for our country", stated the interim president.
