The National Agency for Policies and Coordination in the Field of Drugs and Addictions (ANPCDDA), in consultation with the Ministry of Education and Research (MEC), has launched two methodological intervention guides for the prevention of addictions. The materials are intended for teachers and contain specialized information applicable to both children and parents.

"The problem of addiction is an important one for Romanian schools, so the ministry proposes a more complex approach - 1 - control of the phenomenon outside of school (for example, by involving parents and public order authorities); 2 - prevention/identification in schools (by involving specialists and the school community); 3 - specialized treatment in schools and outside of schools (by involving specialists) -, through collaboration with various other authorities and/or through its own commitment. These two guides come within this framework, addressing the phenomenon especially in segments 1 and 2, which we hope will have an important impact in reducing this phenomenon in Romanian schools," said the minister of education and research, Daniel David, in a press release.

In his turn, the president of ANPCDDA, Rares Petru Achiriloaie, stated that the launch of the guides represents an important step in the prevention of drug use, but also of other addictions, especially in the school environment.

"Now, teachers will have at hand practical information based on which they can discuss both with children, differentiated by age, and with parents, about substance use, while also understanding what addictive behaviour means. Also, the family now has a first resource to understand how we can intervene at home," said the president of ANPCDDA.

Thus, following the model of other European states, teachers will have free access to a guide prepared by specialists from ANPCDDA, together with those from the Ministry of Education and Research, as well as by consulting civil society, which presents methods and principles that teachers will be able to apply to prevent substance use or other addictive behaviours.
