=Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, president of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), declared on Wednesday that he would propose a man for the position of European Commissioner that belongs to Romania in the new composition of the European Commission.

He participated on Wednesday in the ordinary election conference of PSD Sector 3, where the current mayor of Sector 3, Robert Negoita, was elected as the head of the social-democratic organization.

"After two proposed ladies, I think we will propose a man. I repeat, twice Romania came with two proposals for commissioner, ladies. I think that this time, Romania can make a proposal for a gentleman", Marcel Ciolacu said when asked whether he will have two proposals for the position of European Commissioner that will return to Romania, for equal opportunities, respectively "a woman and a man".

Also, the head of the Government was asked about the negotiations conducted by the Romanian side for the post of European Commissioner

"Just as in the case of the Commission and the leadership of the Commission, just as in the case of the European Parliament, you saw that the PSD is represented and Romania is represented by a vice-president in the [European] Parliament. These positions, by custom, are divided according to the political families. Romania will have a representative in the position of commissioner. First, the positions of commissioner are divided within the political families. In fact, we informed the European political family we belong to, S&D, of social democrats, the fact that we want the economy commissioner, the current economic commissioner being Mr. Gentiloni. We will see how the negotiations will go. But you also know that we, Romania, are different from the others. I will nominate the commissioner, and Mr. President Iohannis, according to a decision of the CCR that I am not commenting on, but we are implementing, are negotiating within the European Council," answered Ciolacu.

At the same time, the prime minister specified that he had discussions with his other counterparts on this subject.

"I tried to have direct contact with as many prime ministers as possible, primarily social democrats from Europe, and I also had discussions with Chancellor Scholz, and Antonio Costa, and Pedro Sanchez, and Mette from Denmark. There are some negotiations that we are conducting during this period", stated Ciolacu.

In the same context, he was also asked about Ursula von der Leyen's chances of obtaining a new mandate at the head of the European Commission.

"I know, for a fact, between the big political families, between S&D, PPE and Renew, there is a political agreement, and tomorrow there will be a vote to continue a new mandate for Mrs. Ursula, as president of the Commission, followed by Antonio Costa from S&D to take over the European Council and I saw that Mrs. Metsola was already voted for two and a half years at the head of the European Parliament. There are always discussions about whether the votes will arrive or not. The same discussions were held five years ago. I am firmly convinced that this time the three European families will secure the necessary votes for Madam President Ursula to take a new mandate and to respect the agreement concluded between the European families", said Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu.
