UK Ambassador to Romania Paul Brummell stated on Wednesday that Romania has made progress after its accession to the European Union regarding the state of law and the anti-corruption fight and showed that it is important amendments brought to the Justice laws assist this process.

As regards the proposals for the amendment of the Justice laws in Romania, any country can certainly decide on the legislation it deems fit (...) according to the Constitution and the parliamentary procedures. In my opinion, enormous progress has been achieved in Romania after its accession to the European Union in relation to the establishment of the rule of law and in the fight against corruption and I consider it is highly important that these amendments help this process. There is a Co-operation and Verification Mechanism (CVM) in the EU which is a very useful mechanism, Brummell stated after participating in the opening of the conference titled "Europe's defence and security: The UK and Romania post-Brexit", organised by the UK Embassy in Bucharest.

He highlighted that a large-scale consultation regarding the amendments brought to the Justice laws is necessary.

The changes of legislation are for Romania. Of course, it is important to hold discussions with all interested parties, a large-scale consultation and it is important that the amendments help the process with regard to the rule of law and the fight against corruption, the British Ambassador affirmed.

Brummell recalled the European Commission's recent report as regards the Co-operation and Verification Mechanism.

This report is very useful to Romania and I hope its recommendation will be taken into consideration. (...) We all want Romania to make further progress in the fight against corruption and in maintaining the rule of law, Brummell further said.
