The Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) filed a complaint with The Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians within the Interparliamentary Union (UIP) regarding the "abusive sanctions" applied by the PSD (Social Democratic Pary) leadership of the Chamber of Deputies, as a result of the "peaceful protest" of January 31 AUR held in Parliament, and requests the immediate revocation of all sanctions imposed on AUR members.
The complaint drafted by AUR deputy Adrian Axinia is directed against the interim president of the Chamber of Deputies, PSD deputy Alfred Simonis, and the leader of the Social Democrats in the Chamber of Deputies, deputy Ciprian Serban, the AUR states in a press release on Thursday.
According to the same source, among the rights violated by the representatives of the PSD leadership and the Chamber of Deputies, the following are mentioned: the violation of the freedom of assembly and association, the abusive application of parliamentary sanctions, constraints on the free exercise of the mandate, as well as other acts that prevent the exercise of the parliamentary mandate.
In the aforementioned complaint, the AUR parliamentary group requests "the immediate revocation of all sanctions imposed on AUR members and staff involved in the January 31st protest, formal apologies from the PSD and PNL parties for unjustified punitive measures and public recognition of the peaceful nature of the protest, but and ensuring that such abusive sanctions will not be repeated, as well as affirming the rights of the AUR political group to freedom of expression and assembly without fear of arbitrary sanctions."
The leadership of the Chamber of Deputies decided to suspend the right of AUR parliamentarians to introduce guests into the building, until the investigation into the incident in which AUR deputies and senators "protested and invaded" the halls of political groups is completed, Alfred Simonis declared.
The Interparliamentary Union (IPU) is an international organization of national parliaments. Founded in 1889, it is one of the oldest global organizations and aims to promote dialogue between the world's parliaments, support democracy and encourage international cooperation. Through the IPU, member parliaments can coordinate their efforts to address global issues, such as peace and security, human rights, economic and social development, and environmental protection, according to the same source.
