The leader of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) senators, Petrisor Peiu, declared on Monday that he agrees with the continued capping of the markup on basic foodstuffs, but drew attention to the need to estimate the period in which the problem must be resolved.
"We oppose the capping at producers and we oppose the capping that affects Romanian distributors and transporters. If we are talking about capping the mark-up, it must be done at the level of these supermarkets, but for a period of time established in advance in which the substantive problems can be solved. Social Democratic Party (PSD) comes after two and a half years in which it led the Ministry of Agriculture and the Government and says we have done nothing to remove the substantive problem. Ultimately, all capping measures, as was the case with electricity in the European Union, are temporary measures. They are taken for a well-determined period of time, so that during that period I can solve the substantive problem. If (...) we do not have a calendar to solve the problems that led to this situation, we will wake up in another two years and half in the same situation, that we will need a cap again", Petrisor Peiu told a press conference held at Parliament.
According to him, AUR reproaches the Government for "lack of vision and clarity".
The leader of the AUR senators says that only in February 2026 will it be known whether Romania is or will enter an economic recession.
The AUR senator believes that "the current Coalition spends the same amount" regardless of how many tax increases it decides on and that the budget deficit would have been lower if "expenditures on budgetary personnel had been frozen in 2024."
"The coalition made a budget law based on some data that are no longer valid. No matter how much additional revenue we would have through tax increases, the current coalition spends just as much. If the spending on public-sector personnel had been frozen, without anyone being laid off, we would have had a budget deficit today with 44 billion lei less at the end of the year, which means 2.4% of GDP. So we would have met the budget deficit target, if the Government had frozen since last year, since the public debt threshold of 50% of GDP was reached, if it had frozen spending on budgetary personnel salaries. (...) If the Government, last year, had not increased teachers' salaries or had not increased them by the respective percentage, it would not have had to come after a few months and increase their norm and take away from the bonuses", Peiu added.
