President of the Alliance for Romanians' Union (AUR) George Simion said that his party wants peace in the country and for Romania to remain a democratic nation within the European Union and NATO, Agerpres reports.

"We don't want chaos either; I believe no one wants chaos in our country. Therefore, it is important for there to be peace. We came here for a moment of reflection. I saw some news that we wanted to vote. We did not come to vote, and we are aware of the situation brought about by the Constitutional Court and the way Romania's state institutions have not functioned. Romania must be a democratic country, a great country, one that belongs to the free world, within the European Union and NATO, with confidence in its potential," said Simion during an event organised in front of the Mihai Viteazul National College in Bucharest.

He thanked citizens for not reacting to what he called "the provocations of the Klaus Iohannis regime."

"I made countless calls in the past two days for Romanians to stay calm, not fall into provocations, and I am glad that this is happening. I am glad we are able to make this moment of commemoration for those who are destroying democracy. December 8 is Constitution Day, a day of significance for Romanians, a day when they should have gone to vote freely. For this, blood was shed 35 years ago. But that's not happening. I sincerely hope we do not reach an authoritarian state. I ask President Klaus Iohannis to step back, to withdraw and respect the Constitution, not to mock it, not to cling to positions... I thank Romanians for their dignity and for avoiding the provocations prepared by the Klaus Iohannis regime," George Simion concluded.
