Electronic communications service providers, manufacturers and distributors of radio equipment can express their opinion on the opportunity to acquire spectrum in the 26 GHz, 42 GHz or 28 GHz bands, the National Authority for Administration and Regulation in Communications (ANCOM) announced on Wednesday, in a press release sent to AGERPRES.
In this regard, the local telecommunications market arbitrator launched a questionnaire on the opportunity to grant rights to use frequencies in the 26 GHz and 42 GHz bands for the provision of public networks and electronic communications services on broadband radio support in Romania, respectively in the 28 GHz band for the provision of public fixed radio access (FWA) networks and electronic communications services.
"The questionnaire is addressed to providers of public networks and electronic communications services that own or do not own radio spectrum, to producers and distributors of radio equipment, whose activity also covers the bands indicated above, that operate on the national electronic communications market or are interested in this regard, respectively to central and local public administration institutions, whose legislative prerogatives also cover the regulation or facilitation of the implementation and use at national and local level of "vertical" applications that could be implemented through the use of radio spectrum in the aforementioned bands. The questionnaire is equally addressed to non-governmental associations and citizens interested in this subject," the Authority states.
According to the cited source, this approach was taken with the aim of determining, three years after the last consultation, whether there are clear intentions regarding obtaining, in the short term (period 2026 - 2028) or medium term (period 2029 - 2031), rights of use in this 26 GHz band, as well as whether there are other constraints that must be taken into account.
On the same occasion, the regulator considered it appropriate to complete the respective questionnaire with similar questions for other high frequency bands for which consultations had not previously been carried out (the 42 GHz band, harmonized at EU level, and the 28 GHz band).
The questionnaire can be accessed on ANCOM's website, and interested persons are invited to formulate and send responses to the institution's address by March 16, 2026.
