The Senate adopted on Wednesday a bill designating 2026 as the "Centenary Year of the National Peasant Party (PNT)".

The vote count was 58 in favor, 1 against and 40 abstentions.

The bill, initiated by a group of AUR parliamentarians, allows Parliament, the Presidential Administration, the Government, and central and local public authorities to organise or support cultural, educational and scientific events marking the PNT centenary. These institutions may allocate funds from their own budgets for such activities, within approved budget limits. The text also specifies that activities carried out under this law must not affect the independence of public institutions and cannot be interpreted as partisan political promotion.

According to the explanatory memorandum, declaring 2026 the Centenary Year of the National Peasant Party represents "an act of recognition of the historical contribution of this political formation to Romania's modernisation and an opportunity to reaffirm the values that guided the PNT: freedom, dignity, integrity and respect for truth."

The initiators argue that the law has a cultural and historical character and does not imply additional financial obligations on the state budget. They describe it as a necessary gesture for strengthening democratic memory, honouring past generations, and reaffirming the principles on which the modern Romanian state is built.

The bill will now be debated by the Chamber of Deputies, which is the decision-making body on this matter.
