Attending a German Unity Day reception on Thursday, Romania's Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan highlighted the friendly relationship between the two countries, based on common history, cultural ties and strong human connections.

"Romania sees Germany as a close friend. Together we can contribute to a stronger and safer Europe," the prime minister said at the event hosted by the German Embassy in Bucharest.

Bolojan hailed the 35th anniversary of German reunification (on October 3, 1990), "a moment that changed Europe and demonstrated that unity and freedom can build stability and prosperity."

He added that Romania and Germany share the same European values and have built a solid partnership over time.

"Our relationships are based on shared history, cultural ties and strong human connections, but also on concrete goals for the future. This year we also celebrate 145 years of diplomatic ties. The signing of the recent Romania-Germany action plan confirms the will to develop bilateral cooperation in key areas such as economy, energy, infrastructure, security and education," he said.

Bolojan added that on April 21 the Friendship Day between Romania and the Federal Republic of Germany is celebrated.

At the same time, Germany is the main trading partner of Romania, covering over 20% of Romania's exports. It is also one of the "most important investors" in the economy.

Bolojan thanked the German companies investing in Romania for the jobs created, the transfer of technology and the support for the development of communities.

"Another essential pillar is our communities. Romanians in Germany and Germans in Romania are living bridges between the two countries. In terms of security, Romania and Germany are reliable partners within NATO. We appreciate the support provided by the reinforced air policing mission, which Germany has been carrying out since August 1 this year on our territory. In this context, the Romanian-German collaboration on the defence industry component can play an important role in the coming years," he said.
